This is a design sketch / idea that I came up with recently. I'd done a drawing in a similar style a few years ago, the same kind of Aztec-y pictograph concept. I'd remembered that it had worked quite well so I decided to draw a new version of it.

I'm also bearing this in mind for a portfolio site I'm working on that this will lend itself well to, and I think there are a number of ways that I may explore the look and feel that this could lend a website.

I was reading a little about Yuri Gagarin's achievements today, it was featured due to the anniversary of the first manned space flight. I find the whole Space Race era quite fascinating, it's almost the light side to the cold war. So I thought it would be fitting to do some artwork inspired by this subject. These drawings are oil pastel on paper.

Work with what you've got

This is more of a watch this space post then anything else, but in these tough economic times and currently feeling the penny pinch personally at this time I have to be resolved to work with what I have.

The great thing about this is though, I can put a stop to the wasteful consumer in me that wants to use four sketchbooks to do four sketches, and buy a new set of paints, to add to my four other sets of paints (ok I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea).

When I think back to my time in the UK and the canvases I bought but never quite got around to painting, I feel more determined to work with what I've got.

So, as this is a watch this space kind of blog post, here's a little tantilising teaser for you:

Fibonacci et al

Here are some sketches I've done in acrylic paint, they're just kinda abstract experimenting with shape and form. This mini-series of sketches uses a strict set of colours, pale lemon, green gold, pale olive and cadmium orange (hue). I decided that I wanted to experiment and explore the shapes and colour effects but reducing the potential outcomes (by using few colours) and also increasing the comparability.

This first image I've explored straight edges (another theme I've stuck to with these sketches) and rectangles that stack up irregularly.

This second image I wanted to explore the same straight edges but loosening up on the rectangles and exploring composition and layout.

This third image uses fibonacci, which I'm not going to explain, but if you're familiar with it and the golden section you'll probably see its application in this image.

Faleria, Italian Hill Town, Street

Moving a little bit away from the portraits I've been working on, this is obviously a street scene. The street being one in Faleria, Italy. Faleria is a really interesting place to walk around as half of the town is in ruins (from an earthquake in the 1950s). I went there in May 2005 and took lots of photos.

These are my second bout of drawings from this portraits (drawn from memory/imagination). Again these sketches have been done in ink on watercolour paper. I guess you could say I have a thing for bright colour, and I have enjoyed experimenting in these sketches with different colour combinations and tonalities.

Flubbadigub

Flubbadigub or the eternal quest for the perfect sketch book, is a joint project. The concept is to share the sketchbook on a weekly basis, and each illustrator must do 4-7 sketches in a week, each sketch must be vaguely related to the previous.

We'll see how this develops!
